Moodle is a web based Course Management System (CMS) also referred to as Learning Management System (LMS) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that facilitates learning and teaching allowing the classroom to extend onto the web. One of the most widely used CMS in education is Moodle which stands for Modular Object-Oriented Learning Environment.

Moodle was originally developed by Martin Dougiamas as part of his research on social constructionist pedagogy.  Martin described Moodle as “a verb that describes the process of lazily meandering through something … an enjoyable tinkering that often leads to insight and creativity’ (cited in Chalk, n.d). The first version of Moodle was released on 20 August 2002 and since then has undergone many changes to provide updated versions with new features and improvements.

The primary purpose of Moodle is to enable educational institutions and individuals to create and publish learning content in a coherent and pedagogically valuable manner, so that it can be used for successful knowledge transfer towards students. (Miletic, 2011). As such it applies both to the way Moodle was developed, and to the way a student or teacher might approach studying or teaching an online course.

Moodle is now the most popular open source virtual learning environment among educators around the world as a tool for creating online dynamic web sites for their students. Being open-sourced, Moodle’s uptake has been growing steadily. “With a CMS like Moodle, you don’t need any Web design skills, all you need is the ability to write and teach your ideas using images, text, or any media on the internet . . . there’s no software to buy or install.” (Rowe, 2005). Moodle can be installed on any computer that can run PHP, and can support an SQL type database.

Many educational institutions around the world are now using Moodle to provide an organised interface for e-learning. Moodle allows educators to create online courses, which students can access as a virtual classroom. A typically Moodle home page will include a list of participants (including the teacher and students) and a calendar with a course schedule and list of assignments. Other Moodle features include online quizzes, forum posts where students can post comments and ask questions, uploading and downloading files, glossaries of terms, and links to other Web resources (TechTerms.com, 2012).

Using Moodle in the classroom helps teachers reach across the digital divide and create an effective collaborative online-learning community. It can be quickly and easily installed with very low cost and is user- friendly and interactive that can accommodate a larger user base. Moodle has been selected by many educational institutes for the implementation because of its flexibility, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
