My second example is Otahuhu College which is a secondary school in Auckland, New Zealand with a maximum student roll of approximately 1400 catering the academic needs of year 9-13 students. The school offers a wide variety of educational programmes and learning approaches to meet the diverse needs of the students. Although many academic departments in the school are using SMARTboards for teaching and learning, I will focus on the Department of Technology at Otahuhu College.

The Department of Technology started using SMARTboards in 2010 and at present there are more than 10 SMARTboards available for department use. The department is located in the new wing of the school which has fixed SMARTboards in the rooms. The software programmes are supplied by Manzana Limited which aims to enhance student engagement processes within the classroom. 2touch, RM easy teach and Word Wall are the programmes used to teach the engineering students at Otahuhu College.

According to Appal Naidu, engineering teacher in the department, the use of SMARTboards adds excitement and interest into the teaching and learning process. The students in engineering class are mostly involved in hands-on activities and develop designs on the SMARTboard that is saved for future reference. Students put ideas on board and share their work with the class through SMARTboard, however, Naidu claims that the use is quite limited to only one student at a time. “It takes a lot of time and effort to prepare activities to use on SMARTboards, there are so many interesting things that we can do but need more preparation time” (Appal. N, personal communication, October 19, 2012).

Otahuhu College focused on staff professional development during the implementation of SMARTboards so that teachers can improve their ability to effectively use this technology in their daily instruction. Ongoing training and development sessions are organised by the Department during the year to up skill teachers and bring positive changes to their pedagogical practices.
